Accountancy Services FAQs

  • How much does an accountant cost in Paignton?

Fees depend on the size of your business and the services you need. We agree a clear fee up front before any work starts

  • Do I need an accountant as a sole trader?

It isn't a legal requirement, but an accountant can save you time, make sure you claim all allowable expenses and keep you compliant, especially with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax being introduced from April 2026.

  • When is the self assessment deadline?

Online self assessment tax returns for the previous tax year must be filed, and any tax paid, by 31 January. Paper returns are due by 31 October.

  • When do I need to register for VAT?

You must register for VAT if your taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in a rolling 12-month period, or if you expect it to in the next 30 days. You can also register voluntarily.

  • What is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?

It's HMRC's requirement for sole traders and landlords to keep digital records and send quarterly updates. It applies from April 2026 for qualifying income over £50,000, from April 2027 over £30,000 and from April 2028 over £20,000.
